Islamabad (UNA-OIC) The International Conference of News Agencies (ICNA), hosted by the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) in Islamabad, concluded its activities on Monday with the issuance of a resolution for the establishment of a new international media body: "International Forum of News Agencies (IFNA)".
During the two-day gathering, some 21 representatives of news agencies, from 18 countries throughout the world, deliberated upon issues and challenges being faced by the national news agencies and the media organizations.
The delegates concluded the conference with issuing the mutually agreed upon resolution on the creation of the International Forum of News Agencies to act as a platform/portal of the participating national news agencies. This unique platform would have the provision to welcome desiring national news agencies and even other media organizations that operate internationally with the consultation of the founding members of the portal.
The host APP has been elected by the participants to lead IFNA for this year and has volunteered to provide the secretariat and the human resource for the forum activities.
The conference decided to establish a five-member Coordinating Committee for the operation of the platform. The committee is to be responsible in consultation with the Steering Committee to evolve the strategy and formulate the way-forward for the portal.
IFNA conference will be held annually on rotation basis as mutually decided by the committee. The delegates have agreed upon the need to have flexibility of operating the newly established portal within the given framework/regulations of the respective national news agency and or the media organization.
The committee can engage any member country and include new members and invite suggestions and recommendations from the members. This new platform resolved to exchange news stories and features both text and visual on the portal, which will also share internal news of the member news agencies/news organizations. This can either be done through publishing a news bulletin or an icon within the portal's home page.
The resolution provides for promotion of capacity building through regular training program for both the journalist and non-journalist staff of the member organizations, as well as exchange of journalist visits on bilateral and multilateral basis. It was also agreed that the improvement of the marketing/economic aspect of the member organizations would be considered and consultations will be sought from professional organizations in this regard.
Sharing of video and text surveys on various aspects will be a welcoming part of the portal. A Best Photo and Best Text story of the quarter of the year for every member organization and an overall selection for IFNA Award of the year will be named and awarded from within the member organizations.
The conference paid homage to the Palestinian and other journalists who sacrificed their lives in the line of the duty
