Burshane LPG Reports Economic Strain Amidst Political and Market Turbulence

Karachi: Burshane LPG (Pakistan) Limited disclosed substantial economic challenges in its annual report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024. The company, under siege from multiple economic pressures, reported a significant downturn in profitability and overall market performance due to political instability and a contraction in the energy sector.

According to information available from the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), Burshane LPG faced a harrowing fiscal year marked by reduced allocations from key petroleum suppliers and a diminished demand for local LPG due to soaring prices, pushing the company to a substantial loss. The company’s net loss after tax widened to Rs. 73.68 million, compared to a loss of Rs. 37.70 million the previous year, illustrating a 95.5% increase. Gross margins also fell sharply by 32.72%, totaling Rs. 137.94 million, down from Rs. 151.50 million the previous year.

The economic review section of the Chairman’s report highlights the struggle with unprecedented inflationary pressures, primarily driven by geopolitical conflicts affecting global oil markets and subsequent domestic supply chain disruptions. This scenario forced the Pakistan government to enact stringent fiscal measures to stabilize the national economy, which included dealing with a high policy rate that was incrementally reduced from 22% to 17.5% through successive central bank meetings.

In terms of operational excellence, the company has upheld high standards in health, safety, security, and environmental (HSSE) protocols, continuously seeking to mitigate the environmental impact of its operations. Burshane LPG reaffirms its commitment to sustainable practices and adherence to stringent corporate governance protocols to navigate through these testing times.

The report also outlines the proactive measures taken by the company to pivot its strategic focus from low to high yield investment opportunities in an attempt to recover profitability and market position. The ongoing renewal of its Investment Finance Services (IFS) license underscores its compliance with regulatory standards and its commitment to maintaining operational continuity.

Despite the bleak outcomes of this fiscal year, Burshane LPG remains optimistic about the future, citing improved board performance and robust governance as key drivers that will help steer the company towards recovery in the forthcoming periods.
