Baba Farid Sugar Mills Limited Shows Resilience Amid Economic Challenges

Lahore: Baba Farid Sugar Mills Limited has released its annual report for the year, showcasing a commendable performance despite a range of challenges impacting the industry. As of October 2023, the Company’s Chairman acknowledged the dynamic environment shaped by global market fluctuations, regulatory changes, and adverse weather patterns but expressed optimism about sustainable growth.

This year, the global sugar market experienced several shifts influenced by crop yield variations in key regions, international trade policies, and an increased demand for sugar-based products. Domestically, the sector faced challenges such as fluctuating sugarcane yields and rising production costs. Despite these hurdles, the Company maintained its competitive edge through strong market presence and efficient operations.

A notable development in 2023-24 was the agriculture sector’s growth of 6.25 percent, driven by a significant 16.82 percent increase in major crop production. However, sugarcane production saw a slight decline of 0.4 percent, amounting to 87.60 million tonnes compared to last year’s 88.00 million tonnes. The industrial sector also showed a positive trend, with a growth rate of 1.21 percent in FY 2024, compared to a contraction of 3.74 percent the previous year.

According to information available from the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), the economic landscape of Pakistan was challenging in 2024. The country faced international supply shocks and domestic natural disasters, including floods, which increased vulnerabilities as it recovered from the pandemic. These issues led to a negative GDP growth rate initially, but later in the year, signs of economic resilience and stability emerged, supported by government policy management and international partnerships. GDP growth reached 2.38 percent in FY 2024, despite ongoing challenges.

The Company emphasized its commitment to improving governance. An evaluation of the Board’s performance was conducted, reflecting the adherence to the Code of Corporate Governance. The Board’s responsibilities included risk identification, management information integrity, and transparent shareholder reporting. The commitment to governance was further highlighted by the independent oversight of key committees.

Looking forward, Baba Farid Sugar Mills Limited plans to enhance its competitive position by expanding manufacturing capabilities and strengthening research and development. The Company aims to create enduring value for stakeholders through improved operational efficiencies, cost controls, and strategic portfolio diversification. The Chairman expressed gratitude to the employees, government bodies, financial institutions, and shareholders for their continued support, anticipating further productivity enhancements under the Company’s strategic guidance.
