Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd. Sees Downturn in Quarterly Profit

Karachi: Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd. (PTCL) has reported a notable decline in its profit for the quarter ending September 30, 2026. According to the financial results released on October 22, 2026, the company recorded a loss of Rs 671,157,000, compared to a profit of Rs 2,047,574,000 during the same period last year. This downturn is reflected in the earnings per share, which dropped to a loss of Rs 0.13 from a profit of Rs 0.40.

The decline in PTCL's financial performance for the three-month period is primarily attributed to increased costs. The company's revenue for the quarter rose to Rs 33,511,002,000, a moderate move of 9.20% from Rs 30,684,341,000 in the previous year. However, the cost of services surged by a very large move of 20.28%, reaching Rs 25,608,871,000 from Rs 21,296,240,000, which significantly impacted the gross profit.

Administrative and general expenses also saw an increase, reaching Rs 3,249,643,000 from Rs 2,591,270,000, while selling and marketing expenses climbed to Rs 1,681,355,000 from Rs 1,209,856,000. These rising costs contributed to a reduction in operating profit, which stood at Rs 2,380,532,000, down from Rs 5,055,655,000.

According to information available from the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), the company's financial position also showed some changes. PTCL's total assets rose to Rs 680.36 billion from Rs 647.14 billion in the previous year, with non-current assets increasing to Rs 460.02 billion. Current liabilities saw a significant increase to Rs 278.29 billion from Rs 242.55 billion.

Despite the challenging quarter, PTCL's other income improved significantly, reaching Rs 4,947,205,000 from Rs 2,565,551,000. However, this was offset by a substantial increase in finance and other costs, which rose to Rs 8,365,135,000 from Rs 4,702,817,000.

The company's nine-month results also reflected a mixed performance, with revenue increasing to Rs 97,262,636,000, a moderate move from Rs 89,596,109,000, while the gross profit remained relatively stable at Rs 25,847,912,000 compared to Rs 26,207,747,000 last year. PTCL recorded a profit of Rs 2,959,476,000 for the nine months, reversing a loss of Rs 1,217,192,000 in the corresponding period of the previous year.
