Lahore: The Bank of Punjab has reported its financial results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, revealing a decline in profit despite an increase in total income. The bank's unconsolidated condensed interim statement of profit and loss account indicates a notable shift in its financial performance compared to the same period last year.
According to the report released on October 26, 2026, the bank's profit after taxation for the quarter stood at 4.997 billion rupees, a decrease from 5.145 billion rupees in the corresponding period of 2025. This represents a moderate move of -2.88% in net profit. The decrease in profit is attributed primarily to the increased operating expenses, which rose from 14.93 billion rupees to 17.30 billion rupees, reflecting the bank's ongoing operational challenges.
Total income for the quarter reached 29.82 billion rupees, compared to 28.25 billion rupees in the same quarter last year. This growth is largely due to the increase in non-markup/interest income, which saw a big move of 15.49%, rising from 5.60 billion rupees to 6.46 billion rupees. Notably, fee and commission income surged to 4.43 billion rupees from 3.56 billion rupees, while foreign exchange income increased to 1.59 billion rupees from 908.17 million rupees.
Despite the rise in income, the bank's markup/interest earned showed a slight decline, from 67.10 billion rupees in the third quarter of 2025 to 65.39 billion rupees in the same period this year. This minor move of -2.56% in earned interest reflects broader market trends.
According to information available from the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), the Bank of Punjab's financial results are reflective of the current economic climate, with banks facing pressure from rising costs and fluctuating income streams. The bank's net mark-up/interest income showed an increase, moving up to 23.36 billion rupees from 22.65 billion rupees, indicating a marginally improved net interest margin.
The taxation expenses for the quarter were reduced to 5.01 billion rupees from 6.09 billion rupees in the previous year, providing some relief to the bank's bottom line. However, the charge of credit loss allowance and write-offs increased to 2.25 billion rupees from 1.76 billion rupees, impacting profitability.
In terms of earnings per share, both basic and diluted earnings per share stood at 1.53 rupees, down from 1.57 rupees in the previous year. This reflects the bank's ongoing efforts to manage shareholder returns amidst a challenging financial environment.
The Bank of Punjab's latest financial results highlight the complex dynamics in the banking sector, where rising operational costs and strategic financial management remain critical to sustaining profitability. As the bank navigates these challenges, its performance will be closely monitored by market analysts and investors alike.
