Karachi: In a significant development for the financial markets of Pakistan, Bank Alfalah Limited (BAFL) has been inducted as a trading participant for proprietary account trading in GoP Ijarah Sukuk (GIS). This induction follows the approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) under the proviso to Regulation 6.1(q) of the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) Rulebook, as per PSX Notice# PSX/N-1205 dated December 16, 2024.
The induction of Bank Alfalah into this exclusive trading circle marks a pivotal expansion of trading system access, specifically extended to Commercial Banks and Mutual Funds that are Non-Broker Debt Market Clearing Members (DMCMs) of the National Clearing Company of Pakistan Limited (NCCPL). According to information available from the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), this strategic move is designed to bolster the trading dynamics of GIS instruments, which are pivotal in fostering a robust Islamic finance market.
Bank Alfalah's induction comes after the successful completion of necessary documentary, operational, and technical prerequisites. With this, the bank is poised to trade in GIS instruments issued through primary market auctions at PSX. However, it's important to note that while BAFL can engage in proprietary trading of GIS, it is restricted from trading in other fixed income securities available in the Bills and Bonds (BnB) market, which includes Corporate Debt Securities and Government Debt Securities.
This development is expected to catalyze enhanced liquidity and deepen the market for GIS, offering a specialized investment avenue for market participants. The inclusion of Bank Alfalah is anticipated to bring significant expertise and capital to the GIS trading landscape, thereby facilitating a more dynamic and competitive environment. The market category designated for this induction remains under the broader umbrella of the Debt Market, with a specific focus on Islamic finance instruments.
