Lahore: Crescent Jute Products Limited (CJPL), a longstanding player in the jute production industry, has recorded a reduced annual loss for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2024. The Lahore-based company noted a loss of PKR 7.38 million, an improvement from the previous year’s PKR 9.16 million. Despite the reduction, the company continues to grapple with significant financial hurdles, including unresolved legal cases and liquidity constraints that halted operations back in May 2011.
The company’s annual report outlined that the decreased losses are largely due to stringent cost controls and the finalization of asset disposals, a part of its broader closure plan sanctioned by the Board of Directors and shareholders. The plan, which includes the disposition of assets and a future business strategy, remains partially fulfilled due to insufficient funds post-liability settlements, particularly with the Bank of Punjab.
According to information available from the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), Crescent Jute has not resumed operations and its financial strategy is heavily reliant on the resolution of ongoing litigations with financial institutions. Legal advisors maintain a cautiously optimistic outlook for these cases. The management is actively seeking alternative funding sources to address outstanding liabilities and potentially revive its business operations, pending shareholder approval.
Despite the non-operational status, CJPL continues to maintain minimal corporate and financial activities necessary to manage its affairs, primarily focusing on legal and compliance matters. The company has also implemented an internal control system deemed sound in design, which has been effective in managing the limited scope of its current activities.
Crescent Jute’s shares are traded under the defaulters’ segment at the Pakistan Stock Exchange due to its financial and operational issues. The management remains committed to resolving its challenges and is exploring all avenues to safeguard the interests of its shareholders and other stakeholders.
