Karachi: Dewan Textile Mills Limited, a longstanding player in Pakistan’s textile sector, faced extensive operational and financial challenges throughout 2024, according to its annual report. Despite efforts towards stabilization and recovery, the company reported significant losses and a continued halt in manufacturing operations dating back to 2015.
The company, headquartered in Karachi, recorded a net loss after taxation of Rs. 135.25 million for the year ending on June 30, 2024. This financial outcome reflects a substantial deterioration compared to previous years, with negative equity of Rs. 2.74 billion and a stark imbalance between current liabilities and assets. The report highlighted a particularly alarming contraction in cotton production which declined by 63.55%, severely impacting the textile sector’s output and financial health.
According to information available from the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), the company’s shares have been under significant pressure, reflecting broader investor concerns about the viability of its business model in light of ongoing economic stresses. The financial statements reveal a reliance on a potential restructuring of liabilities to avoid deeper financial distress. The company expressed hope in obtaining creditor agreement on a restructuring plan that could include relief from accrued markup, which has yet to be provisioned in the financial statements.
Operational challenges were compounded by a historical suspension of manufacturing activities due to unfavorable industry conditions and liquidity constraints. The Board of Directors has been actively seeking avenues for operational revival and financial normalization, including exploring new funding strategies to resume productive activities. However, these efforts have not yet resulted in a resumption of operations, keeping the company in a precarious position.
Dewan Textiles has been a part of the textile landscape in Pakistan for over five decades, contributing significantly to the sector's exports and employment. The ongoing challenges highlight the broader issues facing the textile industry in Pakistan, including high production costs, fluctuating cotton prices, and the critical need for technological upgrades to enhance competitiveness.
The company remains committed to fulfilling its corporate social responsibilities, focusing on environmental sustainability, and ensuring the welfare of its workforce despite these challenges. The management's outlook for the coming years is cautiously optimistic, emphasizing the need for supportive government policies and industry-specific subsidies to aid in recovery and sustainable growth.
