Robust Participation Noted in Government of Pakistan Ijarah Sukuk Auction

Karachi: The Government of Pakistan's recent Ijarah Sukuk auction, held on July 25, 2024, demonstrated significant investor interest across various tenors. The auction, pivotal for assessing the liquidity and investment trends within the country's Islamic financing frameworks, saw competitive bidding in both short and long-term securities.

According to information available from the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), the 1-year discounted Ijarah Sukuk attracted bids totaling PKR 201,419.55 million, with the government accepting PKR 16,936.80 million at a cut-off rental rate of 17.2249% and a price of PKR 85.3405 per Rs. 100 face value. This selective acceptance reflects a strategic approach to managing the cost of borrowing while tapping into the market's liquidity preferences.

Similarly, the re-opening of the 3-year and 5-year Fixed Rental Rate (FRR) Ijarah Sukuk witnessed a combined bid of PKR 51,842.30 million, indicating robust appetite for medium-term securities. The accepted bids for the 3-year FRR Sukuk summed up to PKR 19,153.48 million at a 15.6400% rental rate, with a cut-off price set at PKR 100.3261. The 5-year FRR Sukuk saw PKR 20,100.00 million in bids being accepted at a slightly lower rental rate of 14.9900% and a price of PKR 100.3386.

In addition, the Variable Rental Rate (VRR) Sukuk for both 3-year and 5-year tenors, introduced in this auction as well, garnered significant interest with a total bid amount of PKR 130,018.20 million. From this, the government accepted PKR 10,100.00 million, setting a precedent for future VRR offerings. The accepted 3-year VRR bids totaled PKR 5,100.00 million at a price of PKR 101.7971, while the 5-year VRR saw PKR 5,000.00 million accepted at a higher price of PKR 102.2582.

This auction aligns with the government's broader fiscal strategy of diversifying its borrowing instruments and engaging more comprehensively with the Islamic financial market, which continues to grow in prominence both domestically and globally. The PSX's role in facilitating this auction underscores its increasing capacity to handle complex financial instruments and transactions.
