Tandlianwala Sugar Mills Reports Lower Profits Amidst Unstable Sugarcane Season

Lahore: The Board of Directors at Tandlianwala Sugar Mills Limited presented the condensed financial statements for the half year ending March 31, 2025, amidst a challenging sugarcane crushing season in Pakistan. The 2024-25 season was fraught with production challenges, pricing disputes, and significant regulatory interventions, highlighting the need for policy reforms to stabilize the sugar industry.

The absence of an officially declared sugarcane support price allowed sugar mills, including Tandlianwala, to set purchase prices unilaterally. This led to unrest among farmers, who faced fluctuating prices depending on demand, supply, and sugarcane varieties. Despite these challenges, Tandlianwala Sugar Mills managed to procure sugarcane with reasonable sucrose content at competitive prices. However, the procurement process was not without difficulties, leading to a reduction in the volume of sugarcane crushed compared to the previous season, and lower recoveries, which negatively impacted production.

The financial outcomes reflected these operational hurdles. The company reported a profit before taxation and levy of Rs 0.627 billion for the period, a significant decrease from Rs 1.668 billion recorded in the same period the previous year. The drop in profits underscores the impact of the unstable crushing season and the need for strategic adjustments in the company's operations.

According to information available from the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), Tandlianwala Sugar Mills operates within the designated market category and is a key player in the sugar, ethanol, and allied sectors. Despite the reported decrease in profits, the company remains optimistic about its financial performance in the latter part of the year. The sugar, ethanol, and allied divisions are anticipated to earn more profits, supported by expected favorable margins.

The report from Tandlianwala Sugar Mills Limited highlights the ongoing challenges within the sugar industry and the broader economic implications of regulatory and market instability. The Board of Directors' review underscores the necessity for comprehensive policy reforms to ensure the sustainability and growth of this critical sector in Pakistan.
