Dewan Sugar Mills Reports Significant Losses in Mid-Year Financial Review

Karachi: Dewan Sugar Mills Limited has released its condensed interim financial statements for the half-year ending March 31, 2024, which detail significant financial challenges and ongoing compliance issues. The independent auditors' review, submitted to the members of Dewan Sugar Mills, reveals substantial financial struggles including accumulated losses that have severely impacted the company's equity and liquidity.

According to information available from the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), Dewan Sugar Mills has incurred a loss after taxation of Rs. 151.177 million for the period ending March 2024, with accumulated losses reaching Rs. 5.498 billion. This situation has resulted in the company's equity being eroded by Rs. 4.583 billion, while current liabilities exceed current assets by Rs. 5.574 billion. This financial strain has been further exacerbated by the company’s failure to meet repayment obligations on previously restructured liabilities, leading to a default situation that demands immediate payment of the entire restructured amount, totaling Rs. 2.348 billion, along with applicable markups.

The independent auditors have expressed an adverse conclusion on the interim financial statements, citing that the financial disclosures are not prepared in accordance with approved accounting standards applicable in Pakistan for interim reporting. The review highlights that the assumptions of ongoing concern used in preparing the financial statements are inappropriate given the company's severe financial distress. This includes the shutdown of production facilities and non-renewal of short-term finance facilities by banks, signaling deep operational and financial issues.

The financial statements reveal a concerning picture of the company’s operations, with the cost of sales outstripping revenues significantly, leading to a gross loss of Rs. 57.462 million for the half-year ended March 2024. The loss before income tax for the same period amounted to Rs. 184.901 million. Despite these challenges, the company has reported a small segment of other operating income, which has done little to offset the overall financial downturn.

Dewan Sugar Mills' struggle with its financial obligations and the resulting compliance issues have prompted the auditors to suggest that assets and liabilities should be revalued to reflect their realizable and settlement amounts. This review underscores the critical need for substantial financial restructuring and strategic realignment if the company is to recover and return to profitability.
