Engro Fertilizers Faces Significant Revenue Decline Amid Market Share Losses

Karachi: Engro Fertilizers Limited held its Corporate Briefing Session on August 5, 2026, revealing critical insights into its financial and market performance for the first half of the year. The data, reported on August 4, 2026, highlighted a challenging period for the company amid shifting market dynamics and economic conditions impacting the broader industry.

Year-to-date sales for the industry rose by 7%, attributed to favorable farmer economics. However, Engro Fertilizers experienced a decrease in its sales figures. The company's year-to-date sales fell from 691 KT in 2025 to 537 KT in 2026. Consequently, Engro's market share dropped from 29% to 21% over the same period.

In the second quarter of 2026, industry sales increased by 18%, yet Engro's sales declined significantly, from 431 KT in the second quarter of 2025 to 258 KT in the second quarter of 2026. This resulted in a reduction of Engro's market share from 34% to 17%.

The company's inventory position also shifted notably. For the second quarter of 2026, Engro held 74% of the total industry inventory of 971 KT. This is a significant increase from 43% in the same quarter of the previous year, when the total inventory stood at 1,307 KT.

According to information available from the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), Engro's financial performance metrics underscored the impact of these market challenges. Revenue decreased by 12%, primarily due to a decline in urea sales volumes by 154 KT. This was a result of strategic pricing actions to maintain margins amidst rising gas costs. Additionally, DAP sales decreased by 14 KT, influenced by geopolitical uncertainties, supply disruptions, and elevated import prices. Despite this, the company maintained its gross margin at 33%.

Gross profit fell by 11%, driven by lower sales volumes, while net profit saw a 16% decrease. The decline in net profit was attributed to reduced sales volumes and a decrease in other income, although partially offset by a one-off remeasurement gain on the SIDC provision.

Engro's debt-to-capital ratio increased from 50% at the end of 2025 to 56% in the first half of 2026, reflecting higher financing needs to support working capital requirements.

As Engro Fertilizers navigates these financial and market challenges, the outlook remains closely tied to broader economic conditions and strategic adjustments within the company and the industry.
