Engro Powergen Qadirpur Limited Reports Financial Decline Amid Rising Power Demand

Karachi: Engro Powergen Qadirpur Limited (EPQL) released its corporate briefing for the first half of 2026, revealing a decline in financial performance despite a rise in power demand. According to the report dated August 11, 2026, the company experienced a decrease in profit after tax, dropping to PKR 346 million from PKR 460 million in the same period last year.

The revenue for the first half of 2026 stood at PKR 6,064 million, marking an increase from PKR 5,258 million in the corresponding period of 2025. However, earnings per share exhibited a downward trend, falling to PKR 1.07 per share from PKR 1.42 in the previous year's first half.

In the broader economic context, Pakistan's GDP growth reached 3.70% in June 2026, compared to 3.18% in the same period last year. Meanwhile, inflation rose to 7.05%, up from 4.49% the previous year. The policy rate was adjusted to 11.5%, slightly higher than the 11.0% recorded in the previous year.

Within the power sector, demand increased to 61.2 TWh year-to-date, compared to 60.5 TWh in the same period last year. However, the sector continues to grapple with circular debt, which climbed to PKR 1.7 trillion from PKR 1.6 trillion a year earlier. This increase in demand highlights the ongoing challenges of balancing growth with financial sustainability in the power sector.

According to information available from the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), EPQL's financial performance reflects the broader macroeconomic environment and sector-specific challenges. Despite the rise in revenue, the decrease in earnings per share and profit after tax underscores the impact of operational and economic pressures on the company's financial health.
